Local Shops

Your local bike shop (LBS) is your friend and ally. They will help you find the bike or part you really need. In addition, LBS's are generally strong supporters of bicycle advocacy, and that is especially true of many of the dealers in our area .

This page lists these local shops. The BCP also maintains a fairly lengthly list of retailers from around the world. Some of these are LBS's, with lots of great information on great rides in the area, racing stats, and advocacy tips. Others are fancy basically web-based mail-order catalog.

Back in 1995, Lisa Goodman wrote a couple of articles for Spoke 'n Word, newsletter of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance of Dane County, that give a bit more of a personal view than the entries below do. In this article, she wrote about some of the shops in rural communities surrounding Madison. In this article, she wrote about Budget Bicycle Center.

Business Cycles is an article in the (now-defunct) publication, Madison Business First. Business is good, and supporting bicycle advocacy is also good.

These folks do most of their business via the internet, selling from their web site at http://www.airborne.net, but they also have this storefront location at 1010 Stewart Street. Jamie Raddin, a bike biz vet of more than a decade, runs the show. Products include titanium road and mountain bikes, titanium road and mountain frames, components - stems, seat posts, saddles, and bar ends - and apparel - jerseys, shirts, hats, and shorts. They can put a custom bike together in anywhere from a day to three days.

The web site - which they did totally in-house - is worth a visit even if you aren't in the market for a new titanium bicycle.

Hours of the retail "concept store" are Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

    Local Busineses

Wisconsin is also home to many bike-related business, which are described amidst our lengthy list of commercial web sites. We are proud to feature them here. These include

    Scram! Couriers, LLC
    Madison's only bicycle messenger service!
Not really a shop, but a local bike-related commercial operation.
We have been in business since June 2nd, work Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, riding packages around the Isthmus, as far as Midvale Blvd. and Aberg Ave.
There are 11 couriers who work as independent contractors. I work as dispatcher, taking calls and contacting the couriers via two-way radios. Apparently we are the first bike messenger service in Madison since 1987, and possibly the largest.
